Hedgehogs a talk by Chris Matcham

If anyone thinks that listening to a talk on hedgehogs lasting over an hour  would be boring, they would be completely wrong! Chris Matcham, a member of the Surrey Wildlife Trust, followed his previous talk on otters with a most fascinating evening on the subject of hedgehogs and the number of questions put to him at the end showed the level of interest that had been generated.
The hedgehog that we know in this country is widespread throughout Europe and beyond. It has between 5000 and 7000 prickles, very poor eyesight but a great sense of hearing. Chris told us that hedgehogs can hear an earthworm moving along some five inches underground! Their bodies are covered in ticks and fleas and their food consists of beetles, earthworms and caterpillars though they apparently also enjoy cat food (but they dislike fish)!
